Is it possible to import data from a shapefile into excel and edit it, instead of doing a join to a database file?

For instance in the image below is a shapefile of various counties in TX. Would it be possible to export the data shown below, open it in excel, add/remove/edit columns, save it and then open it back up in ArcGIS?

If my question is not clear, please ask for clarification.

Besides the fact that modern versions of Excel can't save .dbfs (at least back to Office2007), you are just asking for trouble modifying a shapefile outside of GIS software.

Thanks. I suppose sticking with edit mode within arcgis dbf table will be the way to go.
