Ok, I am not very familiar with this tool.

While I think I can understand it in theory, when i try to run either the test data or my data it crushes.

Curious is that I was able to run the test data once, afterwards, never again.

I will need to use the tool to produce some statistics on shoreline changes and I have this problem for some time now.

I receive a message saying that an unexpected error occurred and to look at the log file.

And here is a part of the log file :

Thank you for your answers.

I re-installed everything again and run the program. This time it worked.

The tool could not run because I was saving the output as a number with no text.

I am sure people would love to help but

  1. This thread has no tags...
  2. it is not posted in a place that is directed toward an audience,...
  3. the source of the package you are using is not specified...
  4. the procedure that you used to obtain your result is not given.

Any insight that you can provide to the above would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply and I am sorry for the lack of information. The tool was created by,

Thieler, E.R., Himmelstoss, E.A., Zichichi, J.L., and Ergul, Ayhan, 2009, Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.0— An ArcGIS extension for calculating shoreline change: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2008-1278

Any further information can be found here:

Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS)

I am not aware if there is another way to calculate statistics of positional change of a boundary over time in ArcGIS. DSAS tool is used widely in the literature to deal with such a problem.

The process is analytically described in the manual that is provided along with the download of the tool. The problem might be that I installed the tool without first installing net framework 3.5 and the matlab component runtime library utility.

The latter two installs are required for the tool set to run since they are dependent upon it by all appearances.  Installing the net 3.5 framework shouldn't cause any issues, but I would check to see whether the matlab dependency is going to cause a problem.  I would perform the installations first, prior to installing/using any 2nd party tools

I installed LSAS (DSDS V.5) on ArcMap 10.8.2, and following instructions double clicked on the .exe file which took me to Arc Map. I did not see the extension on the list however. Next ArcMap crashed, and now I am unable to use the software (get an error on clicking on the ArcMap icon saying unable to open ArcMap. Any help much appreciated, thanks Nik.
