Create a model (modelbuilder) to convert several shapefiles (polygons) to rasters

Hello all,

I have just started working with modelbuilder so hopefully this is a simple question with a simple answer 🙂

I have a bazillion number of shapefiles that need to be converted to rasters... of course, doing one by one is taking me forever, so why not using the modelbuilder? My question is, all the shapefiles are in a feature dataset inside a gdb (they all have the same table, just different data in it), but on the modelbuilder editing window, it seems to me that I can only put one of the shapefiles, not all of them (when I do the connection on the function 'polygon to raster' and click on this to edit, it only let me to choose one of the shapefiles)... any hint on how to do this?

You need to use an iterator in the model.  You should use Iterate Feature Classes.  Here are examples of using Iterators.

hi Eric, I tried to use the iterate feature class, but again, it didn't work. I even removed all feature classes that weren't the ones I wanted to transform to rasters, so that only the shapefiles I need to work on  remained.

Here's a print screen of the model I created... it's still only selecting just one of my feature classes (ani_mor_1) instead of all of them. How do I change that? maybe I am missing one step?

I think the step you are missing is to run the model. 😄  The model lists ani_mor_1 because that is the first feature class the iterator can see.  It does not list each feature class it is going to iterate through.  Think of what the model builder window would look like if you were iterating through thousands of feature classes...What a mess.

Of course I did run the model, but there's an error in it that doesn't complete... only one raster came out on the output and it was empty

Try this:

Your iterator has two outputs - 1 is the actual path to the feature class and the 2 (variable called Name  in Cyan color) is the name of the feature class. Use this variable called Name as inline variable substitution in the output name of the Polygon to raster such that your output raster parameter value looks like this C:\\Temp\%Name%. Save where ever you want, only use the variable name %Name% as the output name. This will create new rasters with same name as the feature class they came from. 

Tip: Write the output raster to a separate file geodatabase than the incoming feature classes. Write it to a geodatabase to avoid issues with any name being longer than 13 character length.

Hi,
I just ran the model with the %Name% settings you mentioned, and it worked... well, partially. Out of my 100+ polygons, the model only converted 10 to rasters 😕 then it had the message of the error. The last shapefile on the log (Hyp_niv_1) didn't have a raster on my output folder, only the other ones... all my rasters have up to eight letters/numbers, so its less than the problematic 13 characters issue for Arc.
