Utility Network trace options are grayed out

I successfully set up an electric utility network. However, when I want to try the trace feature by going to the Data tab of the Utility Network, the options for the Trace Locations (Starting Points, Barriers,etc.) are grayed out and cannot be clicked. Why is that so?

The tracing service is only available if you have added the Utility Network Data as a service to your map. I asume you are in a client server connection.
