Hello everyone,

My name is Anna! I am currently working as a GIS Technician II at a full-service AEC firm. I graduated from Tulane University with a bachelor's in environmental biology and a GIS certificate in May of 2024, and I immediately began working. I have already learned so much the past 6 months and am eager to continue to learn all the applications of GIS in the federal and planning spaces. I also have interests in the environmental space, so I hope to incorporate that into my career eventually!

Hi Anna!

How do you like your position? I currently work federal government, and I've been debating a career switch. Do you have any opinions on private industry vs federal?

Hi Susan!

Sorry for the late response. I am absolutely loving my position so far. I work in consulting, so there can be slow times, but I try to fill those times with extra trainings. I was also given a lot of responsibility in the beginning of my career which I really enjoyed. I do not have any experience working in government, but from what I understand, private companies generally have a wider range of clients they service (of course depending on their expertise), which I like because I get to hone a variety of skill sets. I also have heard that there are more growth opportunities within the private sector. I got lucky with the company that I am at, so I am sure these things may not be true for everyone, but I would say there is no shame in at least applying to a few positions to see what is out there. Best of luck!
