Exam Purpose

The GIS Fundamentals Foundation 2024 Exam tests the candidate’s knowledge and ability to apply ArcGIS® concepts. The exam will assess candidates’ ability to perform entry-level tasks such as: mapping and visualization, editing, data management, analysis, and sharing.

Target Candidate Audience

The GIS Fundamentals Foundation 2024 exam is intended for candidates with beginner level GIS experience:  

  • Students taking GIS coursework 
  • Candidates seeking a GIS internships or entry-level positions 
  • Entry-Level GIS/Geospatial Analysts
  • Non-GIS professionals wishing to demonstrate competency in GIS fundamentals

Description of Qualified Candidate

The GIS Fundamentals Foundation 2024 Exam is designed for candidates with 150 hours of GIS coursework or 3-6 months of GIS workplace experience. Qualified candidates should demonstrate comprehension of basic GIS vocabulary and concepts. Candidates should be able to perform entry-level mapping, visualization, hours editing, data management, and analysis using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. In addition, candidates should be able to share to and discover content within ArcGIS Online.

 

Candidate Qualifications

A qualified candidate should be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Identify data types (e.g., Vector vs Raster) 
  • Identify which application to use (e.g., ArcGIS online vs Pro, online applications) 
  • Use Map Viewer and Scene Viewer in ArcGIS Online 
  • Identify coordinate units (e.g., meters, DD, DMS)
  • Describe coordinate systems
  • Basic spatial/attribute queries
  • Navigate ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online interfaces
  • Change layer symbology
  • Describe a map scaling
  • Add data to maps from a variety of sources (such as geodatabases, geocoding, and portals)
  • Use attribute tables
  • Identify different geoprocessing toolsets
  • Save and share maps to or within ArcGIS Online
  • Discover content in ArcGIS Online
  • Edit features (e.g., create, modify etc.)

The following tasks are considered beyond the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the qualified candidate:

  • Use GPS
  • Process raster data
  • Use Python/Model Builder
  • Create configurable applications (e.g., StoryMaps, Dashboards, Experience Builder, Web AppBuilder)
  • Identify file formats
  • Use of mobile applications (e.g., field maps, surveys 123 etc.)
  • 3D data

A qualified candidate should be familiar with the following:

  • ArcGIS Online (workflows as of October 2023)
  • ArcGIS Pro (3.x)
  • Living Atlas

Candidates should use the exam content sections below as a checklist to identify gaps between their knowledge and the skills measured by the exam. The relative weight indicates the approximate size of each section. It is recommended that preparation be focused in areas where knowledge gaps are found.

  • Identify steps to add data
  • Identify data types
  • Identify coordinate systems
  • Define fundamental GIS concepts
  • Discover content in ArcGIS Online
  • Describe how to use map navigation tools

Processing and Analysis 22%

  • Describe how to use attribute tables
  • Recall how to perform analysis
  • Recall how to edit local data in ArcGIS Pro

Mapping and Visualization 25%

  • Identify steps to change Basemaps
  • Recognize how to represent and style data
  • Identify steps to generate labels
  • Identify layer properties in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online

Managing and Sharing Content 18%

  • Describe how to validate a map for sharing content from ArcGIS Pro
  • Organize content in ArcGIS Online
  • Identify elements of ArcGIS Online
