Hi Glenn,

I can help you with this. I was emailed internally from someone on our Education team about your issue; it appears the version you had was the courseware version. Note the orange banner across the cover image. Courseware is available with student purchases and rentals only. We recently fixed an issue that went unnoticed with how these two versions can be accessed.

So the version for sampling you want can be found here: https://www.vitalsource.com/educators/products/gis-tutorial-for-arcgis-pro-2-8-wilpen-l-gorr-kristen.... I already sent a recommendation for this book to your dashboard, so if you log in, you should find it there and be able to accept it. Please let me know if you still have trouble. Thanks!

Hi Glenn,

A search on my part also shows the courseware version first; the sampling version appears lower on the first page for me. I'm not sure how the VitalSource search optimizes results, but I do know that searching for the print ISBN will provide any e-book ISBN associated with it in the results. When we set up courseware and sampling versions, both will have the print ISBN as a related ISBN, so they will both appear when you search using that number.

Another piece of advice I can offer is that we're starting to add courseware to a majority of our software-based titles moving forward, particularly for books that are considered textbooks. So there is a good possibility that any textbook of ours that you'll need in the future will have a courseware version. You'll notice, too, that the sampling version can be identified in search results with a circle icon with a silhouette of a person in it; that means it's approved for sampling. I'm including a screenshot so you can see the difference:

Please let me know if you have any other questions or anything. Thanks!

Hi Glenn,

Yes, I do now: The issue was that the e-book had no more courseware codes (EVA codes) available so it couldn't be sold or rented. So we added more codes and it seems to have no issues with the cart now. We're in the process of getting additional codes, too. Also, you'd mentioned that your students don't need courseware; they don't need to rent or purchase through VitalSource if that's the case. They can choose to purchase the e-book elsewhere. Please let me know if any other questions come up. Thanks!

Thanks
Why did I end up at the courseware version.?
I click the ‘faculity search’ and entered the book name. the course ware is what showed up.
How would I search for what you linked me to?

The other book I use is the getting to know ArcGIS pro 2.8.
It appears to still be available.
What is courseware? I do see the 'free' version if I search on the number.

Hi again,

Yes, this book will also be getting courseware, though it appears it also has that issue that the Tutorial book had. So the courseware version is pending, but it will soon have both versions, like the Tutorial book. We can send you a recommendation for the sampling version once it's available, too.

Courseware is software that comes with an e-book; for us, it means that we can offer an EVA code with a rental or purchase of an e-book through VitalSource. (Note: We are limited to including courseware within VitalSource only at the moment.) Here is a blog we wrote that describes what it is and another one here that explains how to access it.

Please let me know if you have other questions. Thanks!

Hi again,

Once we add courseware, it will attach to the version available now, which is the one you have. So that version will no longer allow sampling but we add a different one for sampling only at the same time, so while you will lose access to the one you have now, the sampling version becomes immediately available. Please let me know if you have other questions. Thanks!

I just got off the phone with vital source and was told that the publisher took the ebook out and I could no longer purchase it through vital source. Do you have another recommended website to purchase the ebook?

Hi Glenn,

The e-book is still available but under a different ISBN because it has courseware with it. The link is here: https://www.vitalsource.com/products/gis-tutorial-for-arcgis-pro-2-8-wilpen-l-gorr-kristen-s-v978158.... The e-book without courseware can be purchased at most online retailers like Amazon, B&N, Redshelf, etc. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
