In early 2021, Esri Press launched a new series of books designed to show how modern companies and agencies are applying GIS to improve their data management, analysis, business operations, and customer service. This Applying GIS series explores tried-and-true ideas and strategies to build location intelligence into your bottom line.

Each book in the Applying GIS series is developed in coordination with Esri industry experts and divided into themes related to an industry or discipline, focusing on where GIS is particularly helpful. To date, there are eight themes published or soon to publish, with more on the way.

The two newest additions to this series look at how GIS is helping us understand and improve how we deal with pandemics and how GIS is helping to improve how we manage land assets.

Learning from COVID-19: GIS for Pandemics

We know more now about pandemics than ever before. And the lynchpin at the center of the information management, analysis and modeling, and intervention: GIS. We have a much clearer idea about the interplay of human mobility, health service delivery and capacity, rapid resource siting, case and morbidity trends, and information sharing. It’s time to learn from this experience with COVID-19 and apply what we learn to planning for the next pandemic.

Learning from COVID-19: GIS for Pandemics tells how spatial thinking and GIS transformed ongoing floods of data into actionable insight. Using dashboards to report data, using and refining models to inform policy, applying science to identify at-risk populations, and more, GIS injected sense into an otherwise viral chaos.

Case studies in this book reveal how organizations, governments and communities applied location intelligence to very rapidly gather and process facts, guide leaders, and inform the public in the safest, least-restrictive way possible.

A section in the book helps readers get started implementing a GIS.  Here you’ll find guidance for using web apps, online maps, dashboards, and other GIS solutions to modernize your planning, analysis and delivery of services. A collection of online resources, including additional stories, videos, new ideas and concepts, and downloadable tools and content, add even more.

Valuing Place and Purpose: GIS for Land Administration

Modern land administration systems must support the collection, management, and dissemination of complete, reliable, authoritative, and just land administration data. Land management decisions must consider fragile ecosystems, strive for sustainability, and advocate for vulnerable people groups.

GIS is a modern backbone well suited to managing land administration workflows and delivering contemporary services.

Four collections of studies in this book show how applying GIS to land management helps organizations to aggregate and standardize data, to uncover and visualize relationships like vulnerable ecosystems and development plans, and to advocate for equity and socially just policies.

This book, like all others in the series, also includes a section to help readers get started implementing a GIS.  Here you’ll find guidance for using web apps, online maps, dashboards, and other GIS solutions to modernize your planning, analysis and delivery of services.

Other titles in the Applying GIS series include:

Professionals and decision makers will value the books in the Applying GIS series for their examples and guidance. Educators will find these books great readers for courses in these and related topics.
