Map Use: Map Reading and Design, Volume 1, ninth edition, distills content from the classic textbook Map Use: Reading, Analysis, Interpretation, eighth edition. This refined edition provides readers with the knowledge and skills to read and understand maps, design and make maps, and recognize the limitations and inaccuracies of maps.

Combining authoritative text with hundreds of stunning visuals to describe foundational cartographic concepts in the context of the industry’s latest innovations, Map Use: Map Reading and Design, Volume 1 takes the reader beyond visual representations and into the decision-making processes of cartographers.

Changes for the ninth edition include reindexing; revised datums, maps, and images; an updated map projection guide; a new state plane coordinate system; and updated text to reflect new concepts, practices, and technology.

This book is also ideal for students of cartography and GIS, self-learners, and seasoned mapping practitioners, as well as college-level instructors, with a thoughtful structure designed for college curricula.

Esri Press is now retiring the legacy 180-day software license that came with the purchase of select books.  While some booksellers may still have inventory of print books with trial codes in them, we are no longer able to provide this license which was offered in books published before 10/1/2023.

Codes beginning with the letters "EVA" will no generally, no longer be available for redemtion, except for those found in the book Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro 3.2 (published 5/28/2024). Codes from that book can still be redeemed as coupons, via the Esri Store. New software license codes that provide a full 1-year Student License have replaced these legacy EVA codes and have been provided in select books since 10/1/2023. These codes remain valid and can be redeemed following the instructions located in the introduction of those books or here.
