ArcGIS online Configurable template no longer directs to configureApp.html

With the latest update of ArcGIS Online when a user creates an app from a configurable template it no longer directs to configureApp.html?appid=xxx

The esri apps such as basic viewer do direct to this URL. I have set the app to 'self-configurable' rather than 'configurable' which appears to be a new option as documented here. This shows the 'configure' option in the created template but it does not launch

http://xxx.maps.arcgis.com/home/webmap/configureApp.html?xxx

instead it launches the app with the following url

http://my.app/coolstuff/?appid=368435a5a70f4d2db5e1e3d192e14c92&edit=true

is this a bug or should we be handling the configuration in a different way with the latest version of hosted ArcGIS online?

Seems I may have run into some form of caching issue. It should be 'configurable' app (which I tried) before but didn't seem to work. Self-configurable implies that the site itself handles the configuration, although the documentation wasn't that clear to me.
