Stretched display with ASCII data

Hi

I have several continuous ascII data sets that I cannot successfully display as stretched in ArcMap 9.3. No matter what I try the image shows up as o or 1 although the values show up correctly in all the scale data and when I make enquiries. Correct values also come up if I change to a categorical display.

Try editing the ascii grid and changing the first value to a floating point value - http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=1740&t=295285

Tried that and still no luck. Stretched value remains fixed at 255 while the correct pixel value is ignored.
