Problem with digitizing and area processing

1. I will appreciate any assistance with the following, I am creating polygon shapefiles of catchments with editing tools. After creating a few, I could not go further, there was an error message " the feature could not be created, invalid geometry". i tried redefining the projection but did not solve the problem.
2.Also, how can I solve this error message please " record length exceeded" when trying to run area with tabulate area tool in Spatial analyst tool

Hi,
Ditch the shapefile, create a new file geodatabase and within, a polygon feature class and that should work. I believe shapefiles are limited and we also got caught out regarding area measurements in shapefiles..
