How do I project a dwg file with unknown coordinate system

It might be easier to spatially adjust the dwg with a known feature class or aerial photo:  About spatial adjustment—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop .

That should just about do it....

First, you have to identify the unknown coordinate system and only then can you project it

I was surprised to find that georeferencing worked with *.dwgs!

Hi , you have to define the projection which  coordinate zone you are looking , then go throuh the project the coordinates BY Arc tool box-Datamangement-projection and transformation.
