ERROR MESSAGE WHEN CONNECTING TO SDE DATABASE

Hi,
I do GIS consulting work for a city (mainly data development).
I've moved all my feature datasets that were stored in a file geodatabase into an Enterprise SDE database.
Some of my GIS users are getting error messages when trying to connect to our SDE database.
The error messages says "Failed to connect to database. Connection was attempted with an older version of SQL Server Client" (see attached screen shot).
If anyone can point me to some documentation or has the solution, I would really appreciate it.
