I am attempting to discover if it is possible to add a polygon to an existing polygon layer by creating said polygon from a line selection from a related line layer.

1. Add new line to line layer

2. Select new line and related lines that will make new polygon

3. create and add new polygon to destination - existing - polygon layer

Is this possible?

ArcMap, while a great tool, is still somewhat new to me after using other GIS tools for more than 10 years.

Thanks

This video show how to do it in 9.3, but the process still works in 10.x.  At 10.x you have to add the "Construct Polygons" button to a toolbar.  To find it go to the main menu and choose Customize->Customize Mode...->Commands Tab->(Category) Topology->(Commands) Construct Polygons and drag the Construct Polygons tool to a toolbar and then close the Customize dialog.

You could also use the Features to Polygon tool if you have an Advanced License, but the Construct Polygons button method works for all license levels and is better for an Editor workflow.

In Arcgis you can only copy features from one data set to another that are of like geometries. If you already have the lines that you wish to use, you can always just use the Trace tool which makes digitizing from existing boundaries pretty simple.

As you know, there are basically three types of shapefiles, point, line, and polygon.

If there's a line shape file with something on it you want to copy to a polygon, just set your polygon layer on top of the line layer, and using the snap tool, draw (trace?) a new polygon onto the polygon layer following the lines on the line layer.

Hope this helps.

That's it Richard!  That is exactly what I wanted to do.  Thank you very much!
