Can't load features in 10.3.1

Hi --

I am trying to use ArcGIS 10.3.1 to load some simple shapefiles (from the ArcMap Tutorial set, so I know they work!).  When I log in as a basic user, I cannot open any of the shapefiles I try to open in ArcMap 10.3.1.  Invariably I get the message "FDO error: -2147024894".  When I log into my development workstation in ArcMap 10.2, the same features open perfectly.  The files in question are located on a Samba server running Ubuntu Linux; student workstations are running Windows-7 patched up to date; my workstation is running Windows 8-1. 

Can you advise what the problem is?
