GIS Day Is On The Way

User Conference aside (we kid, but only a little), GIS Day is the foremost global event for geospatial recognition and celebration. Happening on November 16th, 2022, there’s little more than a week between this publication and the international observance of all things GIS.

No need to fret if this news comes as a surprise, though. There’s still plenty of time to learn about what GIS Day is and how you can take part in big ways or modest ones, and it’s entirely normal for GIS Day events to be scheduled into December.

A GIS Day Primer

Starting in 1999, GIS Day has been used to expand appreciation for and the understanding of geographic information systems, particularly when it comes to raising awareness about how GIS benefits society. Awareness-building celebrations often take shape with practitioners, enthusiasts, and educators finding ways to inspire others through their passion for geographic data.

Esri has been a strong supporter of GIS Day since its start more than two decades ago, with ArcGIS users making up a consistent, considerable body of participants. It’s a tradition that’s only grown in meaning as GIS repeatedly proves itself suited to crucial roles in addressing humanity’s greatest challenges, including taking on climate change, stemming the spread of infectious diseases, or modernizing and strengthening our critical infrastructure, to name just a few—applications that much of the public still has little knowledge of.

How to Get Involved

Honestly, celebrating can be as simple as wishing a co-worker, “Happy GIS Day!” With any luck, you’ll be planting a seed of curiosity and inviting some great questions.

If you’re up for going a little bigger, though, you can join numerous other individuals and groups around the world who’ve already officially registered their GIS Day event. Whether that be an educational demonstration in a library or local park, bringing an age-catered presentation to a classroom, inviting the public on an informational tour of your workplace, or coming up with something all your own, get your event on the map by registering it here.

Need a little more help coming up with something? Esri Education Manager & Geographer, Joseph Kerski (@JosephKerski), has plenty of ideas to get the gears turning. You can also read about a few of our many favorite events from the past here.

And involvement gets sweeter still.

Esri will support your local GIS community by extending five ArcGIS for Personal Use annual subscriptions to each GIS Day host who registers on gisday.com, which the host is responsible to distribute as they see fit. Plus, new for 2022, Esri will provide your event attendees with a free one-year Premium subscription to our powerful, personal storytelling tool, StoryMaps. Be sure to use coupon code GISDAY22 when signing up on storymaps.com (coupon expires December 31, 2022).

Collaborate and Celebrate with Other Members

We’ve just launched a brand new interactive GIS Day 2022 Forum in Esri Community where you and others can ask questions, seek and provide support, or just keep everyone caught up on what you’re doing for GIS Day. Our team means it when we say that updates and photos are enjoyed, so please don’t be shy about tooting your own horn.

And if you just so happen to be a collector of badges, Esri Community members who join the conversation by creating a post or replying to one will be awarded an exclusive GIS Day badge for their profile. Hey, it’s not about making others jealous. But we also can’t blame them for feeling a twinge of envy.

Jokes aside, we can’t wait to celebrate with you! Register your event today.

… Psssst. Hey you. We see your ponderous chin scratching. You’re thirsty for more info—and who wouldn’t be? The GIS Day website has more resources and ideas to offer, so let the exploration begin!
