Map export error from ArcMap 10.4

I am trying to export a large map 174in x 96in from ArcMap. The map is really big so when I set this custom format from Print Properties and try to export the map I get the message:

"ArcGIS Desktop has encountered a serious application error"

and the application being closed. Why this happening and how to solve this problem? I just want to export this large map in PDF.

Do you have a license for Adobe Acrobat? If so, try printing to pdf instead of exporting.

If not, what is the resolution you are using?

Are you setting a background color? This will cause rendering of the entire page, so setting it to null may reduce the output size.

Do you have layers and / or attributes enabled under the advanced settings?

Is the background a raster? can you resample it to reduce file size?
