ArcReader 10 labels disappear when .pmfink file associated with project

Hi all,

I am encountering an issue that hopefully someone may have some insight into. I produce ArcReader projects that go out to several field crew members. In this particular case, the ArcReader file works for all three members. However, one member has reported that they cannot see the labels of GPS points in their version. I have checked with the other two members and they do not report this same issue. The GPS point labels are supposed to be visible up to 1:12000. I have looked at the ArcReader file that is having the issue and determined that the labels disappear when there is an associated .pmfink file present. If I remove the file from the folder containing the ArcReader .pmf file the labels display normally. If you add the .pmfink file back the labels do not function properly. I then investigated further and found that the labels will reappear with the .pmfink file present when the eraser tool is highlighted. If another tool is selected the labels disappear again. Originally the .pmfink file was a closed circle. I have tried with a mark up of just a line or not a completely closed polygon and the result is that seemingly random points are labeled while others are not. It is a strange behavior for the software. I also opened the ArcReader file on my computer and get the same issue. I suspect it is a problem with the software.

I am wondering if anyone has encountered this issue and if there are any solutions to this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank.

I have the exact same issue, additionally when I activate the highlighter/pen tool or the eraser tool drop down and then move to select another option from the drop down it disappears.  So I am stuck with the pen color and eraser type on the toolbar.  I know I can select the different tools and colors using the Tools>Markup menu items but it just seem that these very basic functions shouldn't be such an issue.  I am running ArcReader 10 sp4 and ArcMap 10 sp3.  I will try upgrading to sp4 on arcmap and republishing.

Per Esri Tech support:

NIM039789 -> Labels are disappearing when using the pen tool or the highlighter tool (Markup Toolbar) in ArcReader.

The following workaround is available for this issue:

Prior to publishing the map, set the Label Weight Ranking to "None". Go to ArcMap > View > Toolbars > Labeling and within the Labeling Toolbar select the Label Weight Ranking button > Set the default layer feature weight to "None" > Apply > OK. Republish the .pmf file.

Workaround worked very well.
