What is the recommended interval (secs) to be set for collecting the tracklog in the field? I normally use 25 seconds, is there any recommendations? Also has anyone tried the Custom Tracklog Toolbar on ArcPad? I am having issues cloning the tracklog for the day? Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance. Regards,
I think it really depends on your mode of transportation. In super cubs (airplane) for field work we update or capture every second. If by car, maybe similar. 4-wheeler or boat, maybe less often.
If walking, I think it would depend on how fast the person walks, and how smooth you will need the track log. Remember, it is a dot-to-dot (i.e. point-to-point). So, it would depend on what you are collecting and how you will analyze.
Just fyi: In our application, we actually capture points and create the lines on the fly. Because in the mountains we sometimes get a point that zips our to the "ozone", which will tend to crash the system (I calculate distance on the transect, and the distance overflows), I calc "speed" between points and throw out any that are at a rediculous speed (i.e 500 MPH).
I have an older project and, as mentioned, I create shape files, but still write the tracklogs to another directory, just in case the computer crashes during collection. The tracklog tends to keep data that the shapefile might not have saved to it yet. That is how I get around the write issue. My project is customized and written for 7.1....on my to do to make sure it works with 10.x for next year.
Hello Rebecca,
Thank you for your response.
For our projects it is mostly walking, usage of car is minimal. Thus, setting the interval (secs) for a minute or 2 may be reasonable for me. I am going to test it out before the deployment.
Well, have you used tried the Custom Tracklog Toolbar on ArcPad? I am not able to clone my tracklog. Looking into the code, will see what it results into.
Regards, Nita
Nita,
Sorry, I haven't tried any of the newer features in ArcPad, and didn't even know about the Custom Traklog Toolbar. I wrote it all during the ArcPad 6.1 days, so lots of customization. When I start looking at the upgrade, I'll see if I can take advantage of any of the new features, but on the other hand, "if it ain't broken"....
I did A LOT of testing on the ground with things like that before we ever used in the field, and although we only have this project about every 5 years, I tweak and add new things every time (based on feedback from biometrician and staff). Testing different intervals in as real of a test scenario as you can get is your best bet.
Replying specifically to your question about the Custom Tracklog Toolbar - which tool specifically isn't working for you?
1. Archive tool - turns GPS off and moves the contents of tracklog shapefile to another file with the name Tracklog_hhmmss_dd_mm_yyyy
2. Load tool - launches the add layer dialog to browse for an archived layer and when added to map, makes it editable
3. Clone tool - clones the points from the archived point layer and creates a line in an open and editable line layer.
Hello Marika,
None of the tools worked on the JUNO SB I was using. I will try it again.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
I just checked on my Juno 3B and its working. Which version of ArcPad are you using? We did have scripting problem in 10.2 and 10.2.1 that was fixed in 10.2.2. Its possible you need an ArcPad update.
