ArcPad Registration Issues

I've installed ArcPad 10 on a  tablet running Windows XP.  Each unique user who logs onto the tablet and launches the application is being asked to enter the registration code.
We have about 30 summer students, anyone of which could be using the machine on a given day.  How do I get ArcPad to be universally registered, and not just for a specific user?

Thanks.

Bart,

This is a caveat of the licensing method in ArcPad 10.  The registration key gets written to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive in the registry.  Unfortunately, each user will have to log in and register ArcPad.

This is actually an issue that ESRI should take care of.

In the case above, 30 summer students then need to be told the ArcPad registration code in order to do their summer jobs. I know that it is not legal but what prevents these students (apart from their conscience) to download ArcPad themselves and use the same code to "Unlock" the trial version when the summer job is over?

Bart / Rolf,

This change stemmed from an issue that was present in ArcPad 8 and previous versions.  On occasion, if an administrator installed and registered ArcPad, when a non-admin user then logged in and tried to launch ArcPad it would prompt them for the registration code again.

To get around this issue the location of the registration number was changed from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  However, we are well aware that this has caused just as much trouble for our customers as the bug that the changed stemmed from.

Because of this we are working to get the location of the registration number changed (and the admin issue resolved) so that the ArcPad registration number only needs to be entered once on a machine.

There isn't a verified fix yet, but one will be included in a future release.

Feel free to respond if you have any additional questions.

Tim/Rolf,

Thanks for the replies.  Can't say I'm very pleased with the answer but at least now I can stop looking.
I hope the future release that resolved this issue comes out soon.

Tim,

Not sure if you're still following this thread but I was wondering if you could provide an update?
I just tried ArcPAD 10.0.4 on a Windows XP machine and the problem still exists.

Thanks.

Bart,

I'm not privy to the same info that I was before as I've changes jobs.  However, as you've discovered I know for certain that the issue is still present at the most recent release, SP4.

Perhaps someone else will chime in on this one.
