JTX 9.3.1. RPC_E_SERVERFAULT when starting ArcMap for and editing step

Hi All
I have configured a simple workflow (5 steps) in the JTX configuration manager.  I then create a new job using the JTX Application and start working with it.  When I get to an editing step where ArcMap needs to be opened, setting the layer version and zooming to the AOI I get the following error message

The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)).

Having a look in the Event Viewer Application log I see that ArcMap crashed with

Faulting application ArcMap.exe, version, time stamp 0x4b04c788, faulting module VBE6.DLL, version, time stamp 0x4a947697, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00065866, process id 0x13e4, application start time 0x01cb573cf5533d6b.

ArcMap opens but the MXD that was configured is not loaded.  This seems to happen when automating applications.

Has anybody come across this before or konw of a workaround

Thank you
