Populate Survey123 field by reading a file from mobility device (local)

Kia Ora Team,

Is there a way to populate a Survey123 "location name" question by reading a local file from a mobile phone?

The survey is used to record data at multiple locations but need to be grouped under a common name. The name will change from one survey to the next and the user wants to set this name by changing the contents of the file.

Can this be done? If so, can you please point me in the right direction for a how to.

Cheers,

Summer

No, you cannot upload a file into S123 and have it read things out of it.

For some ideas, you could:

  • Email the file to a service email account > have something like FME open and scan the document > make an entry into a database with the "id" > have someone launch from a webmap or the S123 inbox into a survey which will then contain the "id".
  • Simply have the user open the document and copy-paste the "id" out of the document into S123.

EDIT: I guess a followup question should be asked. But, what exactly is the workflow here? Seems counter productive to have a user fill out a local document with data that seems to be meant for the survey form. I am probably missing something, but better understanding the workflow can help with suggesting workarounds.

Hi abureaux,

Thank you.

The survey will be used for instance 15 times today at 'location name' 1, then tomorrow 15 times at 'location name' 2 ....

The user doesn't want to enter the location name each time they fill in the survey - they want this to prepopulate.

I did have some suggestions in terms of creating a selection based on locality or pulling data however they would like to set there own location name, so I am a little stumped.

I was hoping that I could save the answer from what was previously entered. So If I was to enter 'location name' - flowers... then it would continue to use that as my location name until I changed this and submitted a survey with a different name though it looks like I can't do that.

Hi Team,

I ended up using the 'Set as favorite answers' and 'Paste answers from favorite' function in S123.

This works great.

Thanks 😊
