QuickCapture won't run tracks in background, crashes

Hi esri community,

I am looking to use QuickCapture as a solution to record tracks and points at the same time (which I've learned Field Maps can't do). Our field team operates only in out-of-service areas, so cellular or wifi connection is never available. I've got QuickCapture designed in a way that works really well for us, but unfortunately the app will not record tracks when the app is not actively being used. After a few seconds to minutes of running in the background, the app crashes and takes me back to the orange highway loading screen when I re-open it, where I then have to re-open my project. It also turns off my tracking function, so no tracks are recorded during this time, and tracking is off until you turn it back on. Seems like I'm having a similar problem as this person, but when I re-open the app it doesn't have tracking on. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Also worth noting, I am able to stream tracks in the background with field maps with no issues, and field maps and quick capture have the same permissions settings on my device. This makes me think the issue is not related to a setting on my device.

We had a different but somewhat related issue with tracking that appeared after v1.16 where the tracklog stopped blinking even though it was still technically writing a tracklog. They’re working on a fix for this . Probably a good idea to contact Esri Support so they can log it unless QuickCapture Team replied here first. Good luck!

Hi - can you confirm the device and operating system/version you are using?

We're using the Trimble TDC600 with Android 10

Hi Remy

I was able to reproduce the issue on an Android device (Redmi Note 11 Pro - Android 11).

I believe that it is related to Android power saving. Please make sure that power saver mode is completely disabled and retest.

Cheers
John

I am experiencing the same issue with Quick Capture when using the app offline, collecting tracks and points at the same time. The app crashes (IOS 16.1.1, IPhone 11 Pro) when collecting tracks when offline (I'm testing using airplane mode). The track log stops collecting and I have to manually restart it. Our users will use Quick Capture in remote areas for the most part, so I'm nervous about this. I am using the "rapid wildlife reporter" template, formatted for our use plus another view layer. I do have an offline map package enabled (an .mmpk) where I've loaded both an online map from a vector tile service (to work when QC is online) and a downloaded map from that same service (to work when QC is offline). My "low power mode" is not engaged during these tests.

Will do. Sorry - I'm just seeing this now, I need to check my notification preferences!

Hello, was a solution/cause found for the QuickCapture crashing? I assist a team of field staff using Survey123 and FieldMaps and QuickCapture. They occasionally have problems with Esri apps crashing, especially when swapping from app to app while in the middle of surveys or tracklog capturing. Thanks

Hey @StephenRead , yes we did find a solution. They incorporated it into the latest release of the app - we found the problem a few days before the release so the timing worked out well. So if you're working with the latest version, this might be a separate issue. Darn.
