Question: Merge Branch Behavior Change

Hello,

I’ve encountered with the Merge Branch functionality in ModelBuilder after a recent update.

Previously, we were able to use Merge Branch to combine two outputs from conditional logic (e.g., after an If-Then-Else structure). Even though one of the branches would always be empty depending on the condition, the tool still passed through the non-empty output without issue. This made it very useful as a kind of “conditional passthrough” in our models.

However, after the update, this no longer seems to work the same way. When one branch is empty (as expected in these conditional flows), the Merge Branch tool crashes, breaking downstream processes that used to function just fine.

Could you please assist in resolving this issue? or are there alternative tools or workflows you’re using to replace this conditional merge behaviour? I’d appreciate any suggestions or workarounds.

Thank you very much!

Cathy
