I am trying to get rid of the headers in my legend but the option to uncheck them is grayed out. The layers are not locked or anything as far as I can tell. What can I try?

does it become active when you click on the "Legend" name beside the lock in the table of contents (up from what you have selected in it)

... sort of retired...

That particular layer type might not support headings, have you tried turning off the Layer Name?

Hi,

I know this posts dates a bit but I'm having the same issue with a raster. And no, it does not become active if I select the legend element.

Basically, it used to be accessible but after I deleted the "Value" heading from the Table of content, it just seems impossible to change it back.

There must be a way that does not involve adding the layer again to the project and having to redo everything?

Thanks!

This happened to me as well. It turned out the item was in my legend twice.  I removed both items and re-added it as a single item, and then the option to remove the header was no longer grayed out.
