Copy and Paste layers from one map to another in ArcGIS Pro 3.5.5 doesn't work

Hi all,

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm using Pro 3.5.5. I created a new map and I want to copy and paste the layers from my old map into my new map - same project aprx file. It doesn't work. If I try to copy multiple layers at once and paste - it only pastes the first one in the list. If I try to copy the next one and paste - it usually pastes the previous layer. It seems the copy isn't working. I tried Ctrl+C also just to make sure it wasn't my mouse or something. And that doesn't work either.

Sigh,

A

Hey @AndreaB_

Would it be possible to create another map and attempt to copy/paste either to or from there? I'm curious if the map or layers may be in a corrupted state. Have you attempted to update, or have you noticed this on a prior version, or is this the first time this has happened? You may try updating Pro just to see if it's working on that newer version, which may indicate a project issue.

I believe I used 3.5.5 for a bit of time, but never noticed an issue when copying and pasting multiple layers, most of mine were CAD imports and similar though.

Hi @AndreaB_

Can you please explain your process step by step?
I don't want to be a pain but there are Copy issues with all Pro versions from 3.5.x to 3.6 and seeing your steps will help to clear up any overlap with existing flaws in the app.

I routinely copy many layers between maps in the same Pro instance or to other maps in other open instances - it is a daily-use-function for me. The only issues I commonly have is the laggy interface sometimes selecting the wrong layers (Esri workaround recommendation is 'work slower') and the freeze on copy issue.

Freeze on Copy:
After a while Pro will start freezing briefly when you copy anything (text in a layout, layer in a map, attribute entry, etc) using Right-click-Copy or CTRL-C, and if you ignore it, it will eventually hard crash.  The freezes can start with a brief hiccup and can extend to several seconds or longer.  It gets worse over time in a Pro session but clears up immediately when you restart Pro.  If you have two or more instances open, one may show the issue and another instance not.

I have found that in all cases, once(if) it recovers from the freeze, it will paste the full set of whatever I copied.

You mention partial pastes - I've not seen this yet.
There are other related issues with 3.5/3.6 such as the slow-down the longer an instance is open.
This could cause a paste to fail if the first layer takes too long to load and something times-out before the paste is complete.

Add layers to a map or scene—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

under Copy a layer from one map to another

describes the process with no mention of multiple layers

Have you tried import the old map into the new map as a second map ?  So for example, You create a new map and then import the old map to Pro.  See if that can help you copy and paste betweeen the two maps ?

Hi all,

Thank you so much for the responses. I had successfully copied many layers before in Pro in an earlier version and this was the first time it gave me issues. This was right after upgrading to Pro 3.5.5. The aprx was created at an earlier version. @CodyPatterson you ended up being correct - it was in a corrupt state of some sort. I tried after the holiday break and this time the original map view wouldn't even open within the aprx.

So I'm recreating the map view and it's working fine. So we'll blame this on some mysterious corruption.

@RTPL_AU  - Thanks, I didn't know those issues and I'll be on the look out.

Thanks,

A
