Page Query on Layer in Map Frame Within Report

I am generating a report that features an attachment of a photo location inside the details section of my report. Alongside the attachment frame I have added a map frame that shows the full extent of my project area. I would like to show on the map where the attachment photo was captured. To do this I envision some sort of dynamic highlight of my photo location point to appear all while maintaining the same map extent. For example, the only photo location point that would display on my map would be for the one showing the adjacent attachment. It would be similar to an extent indicator, however, contingent on the feature class being used in the report generation. Perhaps more similarly to a page query on a layer to match the map series.

Hi Laura,

This seems to be a common frustration; I have 1,000 points of field data that require consolidation within a report. There is the option to add a Map Frame - but why is there no ability to highlight (or otherwise symbolise) the index feature? The map frame simply pans to centre the map on the index feature - leaving the report user to guess which point is being reported on. Yes, the scale can be increased to zoom in to the map, but this is no good as it loses context when covering a large area.

This omission does render the ArcPro report generation rather useless as you might as well have a dry listing.

The options are, as far as I'm aware:

  • Use Map Series instead (similar to data driven pages in ArcMap desktop)
  • Use Survey 123 reporting instead

Or a funny one - stick with the ArcPro report, and add your map frame in the details section of the report. Then - create a point at the centre of the map frame that sits over the top of the map. This will have the same effect as highlighting the index feature. To the user of your PDF report, it will appear as if the index feature is being highlighted, when all you're doing is putting a blob in the centroid of the map frame!

Another option for getting around this limitation, particularly if you're working with polygons, is to stack two map frames in your report, one for your background features and another on top for your index  features. Make them the exact same size and set the Map Extent settings the same on both, then enable "Clip to index features" on the top one. You can also play with transparency settings on the Tile Layers of your basemaps to do effects like making the basemap darker within the index feature, for example.

All that said, having Page Queries work with reports would be really nice and simplify this quite a bit!
