Idea: Add a visual indication of the presence of metadata on a geodatabase or feature class in the Catalog pane or in the tooltip/popup that appears when you hover over an item.
Reason: I work at an environmental consulting firm where we work at a fast pace on multiple projects every day. Multiple people might work on the same project at different times, and it's important for us to be able to quickly identify the right geodatabases and layers to complete our work. We mostly accomplish this through naming conventions, but sometimes it's helpful to add metadata to provide additional explanation. It would be great if we could tell if an item had metadata available without having to actually open and view the metadata. It takes a few seconds for the metadata to open, and when we have lots of layers to dig through, those seconds add up. I think a lot of important metadata goes unread because people don't realize it's there.
Some ideas would be to show the item name in bold when metadata is present, or to add an asterisk or a little icon to the right of the item name, or to add a little star or other symbol to the corner of the existing icon to the left of each item in the Catalog pane. Another idea would be to add a note to the popup that appears when you hover over an item, but that would be my last choice since it requires action on the part of the user.
Thanks for this Idea @HollyTorpey_LSA. Over the last several releases of ArcGIS Pro, the development teams have been working hard to eliminate all extraneous calls that open metadata, as this significantly degrades performance. This request would work counter to that effort and slow browse performance for users in Pro.
There are other user ideas related to metadata that we are considering for future development that may satisfy your needs. Consider adding kudos to one or more of these ideas:
Thanks for the explanation. I definitely don't want to push for anything that degrades performance! I'll check out the other ideas.
