Right now Excel support in ArcGIS Pro seems a little behind.

  1. You have to close and reopen ArcGIS Pro before seeing any updates made to Excel files
  2. Only Excel 2007 .xlsx files are supported - when you try to open newer files they simply display a blank table with no error messages
  3. You are unable to define field types - these are pre-determined by the software (well the Microsoft driver) and there is no way to check why a field type is not displaying as you expect without going back to Excel and altering it appropriately. If you go the other way, you have to run the Excel to Table tool, add additional fields for those that are not displaying as expected, calculate those fields and delete the old fields before being ready to use the data natively in ArcGIS Pro
  4. You have to install an additional component to see Excel files

I realize there are components here that are likely difficult to address for technical reasons, but they do hinder the use of Excel files in ArcGIS Pro and it would be great to see some of these addressed as the functionality progresses.
