It seems every time I add a number of shape files or feature classes to my map, ArcGIS does a "great job" of picking colors that are so similar it is difficult to differentiate between the different feature classes.
It would be nice if there was a way you could have them load with better contrasting colors. To be fair I end up changing most of them to what I want; but sometimes I would use them directly if there was better contrast by default. It is always a mystery how similar the colors can be.
