The worst nightmare for every ArcGIS user is broken data links. ArcMap and ArcCatalog should provide robust, intelligent and automated data source management which continually maintains integrity of project’s data structure and maximally assists user in its preservation. This would bring more freedom to the work process and establish more user comfortable environment.
Guarenteed all ArcGIS Desktop users will have a broken data source sometime or another. Server names change, systems get updated.
Even when you go to a particular folder containing Map Documents in Catalog and mistakenly click on an mxd the whole application grinds to an inevitable halt!
So no option but to open Task Manager and kill ArcMAP process or go make a cup of tea!
Would be great if you could enable a background search set to go overnight that will then say "grey out" all map documents with dodgy datasources?
ArcGIS Desktop retired on March 1, 2026 so we won’t be considering this idea. We recommend that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro, our fully supported desktop GIS application.
In ArcGIS Pro, new options are available to help maintain data sources in a map or scene. Settings are available that can remove or update map layers if a data source is deleted or renamed. These settings can ease the work of keeping your maps up-to-date but they can also impact performance. Learn more in the "Layer data sources" section of the ArcGIS Pro help topic "Map and scene properties": https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/mapping/properties/default-settings-for-new-maps-and-s....
Also, an Update Data Sources experience is available in the catalog view that lets you update the data source for many map or scene layers at once, and use find and replace to change data sources when necessary. Learn more in the ArcGIS Pro "Update data sources" help topic: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/projects/update-data-sources.htm.
Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas. We truly appreciate your contributions to continuously improving the software to help you do your work and look forward to what ideas you have for ArcGIS Pro.
I understand that ArcGIS Pro brings new features, but most ideas I proposed simply are not available in ArcGIS Pro. I therefore think that closing this idea with 92 Kudos is not related to the transition to ArcGIS Pro, but rather means that ESRI does not want to deal with any of these ideas at all.
I expected a more precise justification when closing the idea than this general statement. I would rather appreciate information on the individual ideas, whether you plan to deal with any of them in the future. So that I don't have to rewrite them separately and unnecessarily "for ArcGIS Pro" again (after 16 years).
