Why are the credits so long for the World Topographic map?

I want to use the Esri basemaps to ease map creation but I find the credits are too long.  Its important to give credit where its due but to have zero control on how it's displayed is frustrating.  Here is my example of the World Topographic map on a small layout.

The map is unusable in this condition.  Even if I could include the credits outside of the map frame that would help.

Thanks for asking about this, the service layer credits are completely overkill. Just using the most basic topographic basemap requires nearly a paragraph of nonsense that nobody is going to look at or use in any meaningful way. It is really pretty absurd, the system seems to be setup to be avoided instead of implemented smoothly. Why not a tiny QR code, a reference number, anything!? Does ESRI care about maps actually looking nice?
