Hello,

I am attempting to upload a map to my ArcGIS Online account that I made in ArcGIS Pro. I set the map file's extent to WGS 1984 Web Mercator (auxiliary sphere) and also created three new shapefiles to have the same projection as the map. However, two of my shapefiles are being drawn in Russia, and one is being drawn outside of the world (literally). I am trying to have them set in Virginia - does anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Can you provide the shapefiles in question by attaching them to this post? There are a few possibilities  that need to be touched.

  • Have you verified the projections of the shapefiles to be correct? If the geometry looks good even in the wrong location projection troubleshoot is the first place to start.
  • If you start a new map in Pro and add the shapefiles, do they align correctly with your referential data?
  • Have you zipped the shapefiles and uploaded via Online web interface as opposed to publishing via Pro?

Once we can see the data we can lend a hand.

Regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for your response! Unfortunately I cannot provide the shapefiles at this time due to the information being more sensitive. However, I took your advice and the projections of the shapefiles are all correct and consistent. The geometry looks good and two are aligned together in the same position (the ones in Russia) and one is way out in the ether. I started a new map in pro and added the shapefiles and the same thing occurred. Plus I made sure to set the map frame to the same projection. I haven't zipped the shapefiles though and uploaded via Online web interface yet so I can try that method out this afternoon.

As a backup do you know if there is a method to publish a map made in Pro using a NAD 1983 StatePlane projection to ArcGIS Online StoryMaps as an interactive map? If I'm able to do this, it would save quite a bit of time and effort and nullify my previous issue.

Thanks Again for Your Help!

Hi Ian,

I understand on the sensitivity issue.

Having a known projection sure cleans up maps. Have a look at this to change the ArcGIS Online projection from Web Mercator to the projection of your choice. https://resources.esri.ca/getting-technical/how-to-change-the-projection-in-arcgis-online-in-one-eas... With the projection set I would think the story map would consume that data appropriately.

I hope that helps.

Tom
