Hello,

I would like to use content from the World Administrative Divisions layer package (from ArcGIS Online) as a basemap for a figure in my master's thesis.  The data is licensed under CC Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license (see attachment).  My question: Is it legit to use this data in a figure which will go in a copyrighted thesis?  Or do I need to make some provision to have the figure itself licensed under the same CC license?

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I am no legal expert...

This web page seems to imply that you need make the license of the data clear. The paragraph at the bottom of the page seems to sum it up.

Notice ?? For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page.

hope this helps,

Mike

Right, but the issue is the Share Alike part: "If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one."  Does this refer to just the figure?  Must the thesis as a whole be Share Alike??  Would it be possible to use Esri content in a figure to be published in a peer-reviewed journal?

Alternatively, is there a way to purchase Esri content for such use?

You just need to give credit to the data providers when you include your image in your thesis. Specifically, Esri and Delorme Publishing Company, Inc.

Take a look at the credits section of the item.
