Saving/Importing Symbology

I am using ArcGIS Online to create maps for field work to suppliment paper maps that may not be 100% updated.  The status of the features on these maps updates daily and it is impractical to get updated paper maps to our contractors.  Currently I'm exporting two shapefiles to use with ArcGIS Online.  These shapefiles are symbolized with unique symbols depicting eight different levels of status.  I read about saving properties for a layer (http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/help/index.html#/Saving_item_properties/010q0000009n000000/), but I do not see the "Save Item Properties" option.

Is there a way to save or import symbology for these layers once they're in ArcGIS Online, or do I have to redo the symbology every time I update them?

Here's the sentence in the documentation that applies in this case:

You cannot save item properties on feature layers from CSV, TXT, GPX, or shapefiles because these layers are stored in the map and not as unique items in the website.

Basically, there is no support for saving symbology for shapefiles.

Thanks,

Mike
