Polygon visibility when viewing full scale map

I was given a shape file that was created by different software. It contains many polygons. When i am viewing the map zoomed out, it is only showing small black dots where the polygons are. I have to zoom way in to see the detail of the polygons. Is there a way to see the polygons and their colors better when the map is zoomed out.
