Passing Token to ArcGIS Online

I have a secured service in ArcGIS Server (publicly available).

I want to share it with ArcGIS Online by passing a URL:

https://myportalurl.com/arcgis/rest/services/stuff.MapServer?token=<my token>

ArcGIS Online Strips the Token off the end.

How do I avoid this?

Thanks, I think this is linked to another issue because the " Store credentials with service item. " step in that article does not appear in the ArcGIS Online interface for me.
