In the old Map Viewer Classic, it was possible for a user (without an Esri account) to upload a zipped shapefile directly into a web map. This worked well for “one-off” exhibits—for example, taking a basemap or service from a REST endpoint, adding a shapefile layer on top, making some minor symbology tweaks, and then screengrabbing the map to send to another user. This was good for non-GIS users to communicate an idea quickly.
In the new Map Viewer, however, it looks like users cannot add a shapefile unless they have an Esri account.
My question:
What are the current options for allowing users without ArcGIS Onlinee accounts to upload a shapefile and build a simple web map or web app exhibit?
Are there recommended workflows or lightweight tools to replicate what was possible in Map Viewer Classic?
We dont have the organizational resources to give out any more ESRI user accounts than what has already been alocated
Users with free public ArcGIS Online accounts (not organizational accounts) can add CSV, GeoJSON and KML files to the new Map Viewer. If they sign up for a free account and get an open source program that can convert their shapefiles to GeoJSON (like QGIS) that might do the trick.
