map service or image service

The tiled map service is supported to ArcGIS.com, but for imagery what kind of service should we publish, map service or image service? The dynamic map server can be used in ArcGIS Server 10.1, how about ArcGIS Online?

Summary: Depends on the purpose, however for most common purposes the cached map service is the best choice.
