I know labels are not possible (without a somewhat messy kludge) in ArcGIS Online, but what about when creating a new service in ArcGIS Online for Orgs? (i.e., publishing to a "hosted service" in 10.1)

From what I can tell, when I compose a new MXD and then publish the new service to my ArcGIS Online for Orgs account, all labels are stripped out.  I expect this when viewed via ArcGIS.com, but I held out hope the labels would show when the service is viewed via ArcMap... nope.

Can anybody confirm or deny what I'm seeing?

it depends on what kind of service you created. If you created a hosted tiled map service, the labels will be preserved because they will be drawn when the cache is created. If you've created a hosted feature service, there are no labels, just the geometry and attributes of the features.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks for your response Mike.  Admittedly I have not messed with tiled services much since they burn through "credits" very quickly.  Changing subjects just slightly, but still related, can you point me to an "official" reference for credit usage?  I've only found information from non-Esri sources.
