Hello,

Our organization is just getting started with ArcGIS.com for sharing interactive online maps and web apps.  We'd love to use the service to share information with our clients, be we can't have the map shared with "everyone" and searchable for the whole arcgis.com community.  We also don't want to require clients to log in using one of our arcgis.com organizational accounts, and the clients don't have their own arcgis.com organizational accounts either

I can't seem to figure out how to securely share the web maps with our clients.  Is there any way we can create a map using arcgis.com that's accessible ONLY from a link we distribute? We're currently using google maps and would love to move away from that, but without this basic feature it's impossible. I'm aware that one way to approach this would be to run our own arcgis server / portal, but currently that's not an option for us.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kathy

I hope all is well with you and your family.

Yes, ArcGIS Online for Organizations allows for the creation of Groups. These groups can be set as private or public so you have complete control over who sees the information who have created and posted.

Randall, thanks so much for the info. I see that the Volunteer account, (which I believe is the same as ArcGIS for Personal Use), provides a named user and ArcGIS Pro. However, I wasn't sure if it also offered ArcGIS for Organizations, or if that's something different.

Randall E Raymond‌, I'm now ready to share a web map to a limited audience. I've created a group. Is it now possible to invite people without AGOL accounts to view a non-public web map? Or do I need to have all viewers create free accounts and then invite them to join my group?

Hi Kathy

I hope all is well with you and your family.

Yes, you can invite them into your private group whether they have an AGO account or not and they will be able to see and interact with all of the maps, presentations and web apps you create and share with them in this private group.

Have fun!

I don't see an option to invite a non-accountholder to join a group. Could

someone advise on specifically how to proceed?

Hi Randy-

How are you securely sharing to others who don't have an ArcGIS Online for Organizations account?  I understand how groups work, and that groups can contain members from different AGO organizations, but I don't think (unless things have changed recently) that something can be shared privately with others who are not members of an ArcGIS Online Organization group.

Also, I don't believe ArcGIS Online "Public" accounts can be members of an organization group.  Also, although Public accounts can create groups and invite other public accounts to be members of that group, anything shared with that "public" group must be shared with everyone (which is a change that Esri made after the introduction of subscription accounts/organizations….originally private groups using the free public accounts could have materials that were not shared publicly).  Have things changed and I missed the announcement?  Hope all is well with you,

Ina

I'm exploring the ArcGIS product line and since I work as a volunteer for charitable organizations, I'm wondering if the Nonprofit-Volunteer license will allow me to offer secure map sharing to specific charities. If not, I'd appreciate insight into which product I would need.

Mike Minami‌, would you or another 'authority' be able to provide clarification on secure map sharing? Based upon information in this discussion and with Sales regarding secure sharing, I purchased an ArcGIS Pro volunteer (Basic) license and just invested close to 100 hours learning and creating content. I'm really hoping that I wasn't misinformed.  Thanks in advance.

kakaufman The information presented in this post is still valid and the business model has not changed.

Public (free) accounts can't share items privately. In order to share privately, all parties must have a subscription to ArcGIS Online. Then, items can be shared privately through groups that all parties belong to.

Hope this clarifies things.

Mike, so just to clarify further --  is it correct that I can provide secure access to my maps by having the person create a free AGOL account and then inviting them to my group? If they do not have a "non-personal" email address, would that be an impediment to their creating an AGOL account? Thanks in advance.

kakaufman‌ No. Private sharing is not a feature that public accounts have access to. A public account holder will not be able to join a group created by an organization. Private sharing is only a feature of a subscription.
