Group Layers Automatically Expanding in Web Map

Not sure if there is something wrong on my end:

With the February 2025 agol update, it seems like group layers automatically expand when data is hovered over them in a web map (i.e. I move a layer to be underneath a group layer. When I "pick up" my layer and go to bring it under the group layer, the group layer automatically expands. This goes for all group layers between my layer and my destination). Though this may be an intended functionality, it is difficult to work with data layers when it suddenly turns into 20 layers I'm trying to scroll past than the one or two group layers.

Was this an intentional update? Is there a way to disable this? Again, could just be something weird on my end!

I think this is intended functionality to allow you to drop a layer within a group.  I can see your point though if you have several groups expand as you try to move a layer.  As an alternative, you could use the Move button in the layers options. This will bring up a list of Groups in the web map so that you can select the appropriate group from this list that the layer will be moved to:

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback! Good to know about the Move functionality; unfortunately, not all layers/group layers I'm rearranging are going into another group. It seems like a hefty workaround for an obstacle that doesn't have to exist (not your fault).

I'd rather deal with the two extra clicks of adding a layer to a sublayer in a group.

It is bothering me to have the group layers expand automatically when dragging and dropping layers into groups. I think it is weird to pick something up to drag it and have the area you are dragging it to dynamically moving when you are trying to move the mouse. It makes it hard to get it to go where you want it without holding the mouse button down longer and scrolling a bit more than would be normal to move something.

I think it would be better if they didn't expand automatically.

I started using the Move button that you demonstrated and that works fine. I move the layer then I expand the individual group afterwards to move where it is located in the group and this prevents all of my groups from expanding, which was really irritating. So that is nice to have this as a feature.

It is interesting to think about how many steps or clicks are necessary in order to move layers into groups.

I think a better design would be to drag and drop the layer to a group and have it not expand automatically, and have it put the layer at the top of the group by default. Then the worker can expand the group and move the layer to where they want it to go.

Agree. It should follow the successful existing ArcGIS Pro UI and still be understandable by non-pro users.
