Alias field name changes not reflected in existing webmaps

I want provide more understandable field names for the legends of a series of maps used in a story map. When I change the field name aliases via the Data tab of a given hosted feature layer, those alias name changes do not always get reflected in the displayed field name within the Webmaps where said layer is already loaded and thus show the original field name in the legend. This is only occurring for some field name changes but if I reload the layer with a fresh copy, all field name alias show what I changed them to.

Any ideas what or why this is happening?

I'm having the same issue and can't get it to work. Did you have the chance to resolve this?

The alias for the field names in a WebMap is controlled by the Popup. When you re-add the data the Popup is essentially refreshed.

Classic Map Viewer: Try going to the Popup of the layer in the WebMap and opening the "Configure Attributes" window. Change some field aliases there and see if it solves your issue.

New Map Viewer: Select the layer and go to fields. Click on a field and alter the display name.
