Item Gallery Using Internal ArcGIS Server

All,
I would like to know if anyone has built a map item gallery that is connected to their internal server and not ArcGIS.com. This is what I would like to do using the gallery dijit but am not sure it can be done. Any help would be great.

Thanks for the reply and thanks for giving this some thought...
I would need to have a basic ArcGIS.com account for this to work correct? I would guess if that's true, it would be a hard sell being they decided to go with ArcGIS Server vs doing some hybrid solutions with ArcGIS.com. I like the idea mucho thou...\

all that should be necessary to test my suggestion is a free personal arcgis.com account tied to an Esri Global ID (see the last paragraph of the following link for more information. 

its my understanding that paid subscription account is only required to take advantage of hosted feature and tiled map services or to store content within the cloud repository of a particular organization.
