Can anyone suggest the website where I can get free shape files of India and its states?

"india shapefiles free download" which ones did you rule out after a google search would be a good starting point so we know what you looked at and which ones weren't suitable

Have you checked out the Global Administrative Areas site? Click on 'Download', on the dropdown select 'India' and download the shapefile, geodatabase, etc. http://www.gadm.org/
