There is a lot of documentation that changing the short name for the url of a organization is easy to do in the admin organization settings. However, ours is disabled. Why is this and how do we change the community organization name? Open Data is disabled for the community organization and there are no licenses checked out for the organization. We just activated Hub Premium with our employee organization and haven't added any non admin members or created any content in the group. The admin who activated gave it a different name than intended. With all that in mind we receive this message when trying to change the short name:

Is the only option to delete the organization and reactivate it? (Our employee organization does have Open Data enabled and has licenses checked out... does that influence this?)

Just wondering if anyone from Esri and Hub Premium here can take a look at this. We created a support ticket (#0333987), but there is much confusion with Esri Support in thinking that we are trying to change our "ArcGIS Hub domain". Which we don't want. Our community organization name is gis-olmsted-hub.maps.arcgis.com. ArcGIS Hub via our employee org is gis-olmsted.hub.arcgis.com. They are too similar and is causing confusion so we want to change the community organization short name to olmstedcommunity.maps.arcgis.com. Our employee org: gis-olmsted.maps.arcgis.com, and ArcGIS Hub gis-olmsted.hub.arcgis.com stay the same.

The documentation to activate Hub premium community organization gives the directions to rename the short name, however this is not actually possible, the option is greyed out. Support is telling us we can't even start over, delete the community organization, and create a new organization. However, I wonder if they think we are talking about ArcGIS Hub (gis-olmsted.hub.arcgis.com) or if they understand we are talking about our community organization short name.

Hi Teresa - It took me a few minutes to understand what you want to do, but it seems you want to change the short name of this organization:

https://gis-olmsted-hub.maps.arcgis.com/home/index.html

If that's correct, then you will find how to change the short name in this section of the administration help:

https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/administer/configure-general.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_CF88D4923E734...

However, Having lived through this twice in a couple of different organizations I would personally advise against doing this. Note the caveats:

As for the important considerations part, read more about them here:

https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/reference/faq.htm#SHORT_NAME

Like the FAQ states (roughly paraphrased) this is a pain in the neck and there may be long range ripple effects, or depending what you have going on in the org might not even be possible without a lot of dismantling. Especially if you have lots of content in that org already, this will be troublesome.

Perhaps others with experience with short name changes can offer more opinions/advice.

Thanks for the feedback! The main problem is ESRI has DISABLED the ability to change the short name for community organizations. So while I have also read the instructions you’ve sent and do heed the warning (though this a new org and it has no content and no members) we are not able to change the short name. We see the section in the org settings, the edit button is greyed out. As shown in my post, there is an explicit warning that Esri has it disabled… which is contrary to any of the documentation related to the organization short name. This is what I need help with for the Esri Hub Premium/Community Organization team. Why is this disabled? And how can we change the name?
