In June 2024, user types were updated across Esri technology to streamline licensing and better align with customers’ needs. Accordingly, to more closely match user types with the needs of Hub community members, an updated Hub Community Member user type will go into effect with the ArcGIS Online update in February 2025. This update will happen automatically, and user types will continue to facilitate workflows and productivity.

With the ArcGIS Online February 2025 update, all existing Creator user type community accounts in Hub community organizations will be automatically updated to the Hub Community Member user type. This change will take effect automatically and will not require action by the individual community members or by the organization holding the ArcGIS Hub Premium license. In addition, any content or groups community members have created will not be affected. Please note that this user type is for community organizations in ArcGIS Hub Premium subscriptions only.

FAQ

How will this change take effect?

This change will happen automatically and will not require action by the individual community members or by the organization holding the Hub Premium license.

What actions do I need to take as an Administrator?

Currently, some Creator user types in each Hub community organization have been assigned Administrator roles to be able to administer the Hub community organization. To continue to serve these individuals, three Creator user types will be provided per Hub community organization to maintain the administrative needs of the Hub community organization. Administrators should assign themselves the full Creator user types we are providing.

How many Administrator roles can be assigned in the Hub community organization?

While we have included three Creator user types along with the updated Hub Community Member user types, there is no restriction on the number of Administrator roles that can be assigned. The updated Hub Community Member user type can also be assigned the Administrator role.

While it is possible for any Hub community organization Administrator to change the role settings on any Hub Community Member user type from 'publisher' to 'administrator,' it is recommended to reserve the Administrator role to only those who require the additional privileges associated with it.

What actions do I need to take as an existing community member?

Existing community members do not need to take any action as their user type will be automatically updated to the updated Hub Community Member user type. This change will not impact the content they previously created or content to which they contributed.

What actions do I need to take as a community member signing up for a new account?

All new members joining the Hub community organization will be automatically assigned the updated Hub Community Member user type. No additional action is required.

What can the updated Hub Community Member user type do?

With the updated user type, community members can continue to perform a variety of tasks, including:

  • Creating and sharing content such as StoryMaps, surveys etc.
  • Participating in discussions and forums
  • Accessing resources and content shared publicly or privately with them
  • Collaborating with other members in a team
  • Contributing to Hub projects and initiatives
  • Participating in Hub events and other engagement activities
  • Managing their profile and settings

Community members will continue to be able to engage and collaborate with the organization to support the organization in achieving its goals effectively.

What can the updated Hub Community Member user type not do?

No roles or privileges will be changing. This user type will continue to facilitate workflows and productivity. The following apps are not intended for the community, so are not in this user type:

  • ArcGIS Pro Basic
  • ArcGIS Data Pipelines
  • ArcGIS Flight
  • ArcGIS GeoBIM
  • ArcGIS Knowledge Studio
  • ArcGIS Mission Manager
  • ArcGIS Excalibur
  • ArcGIS Image Hosting
  • Web Editor

Will existing content be affected?

No, content or groups that community members have already created will not be affected.

Is there any effect on roles and privileges with this update?

The update to this user type will not impact the roles and privileges previously assigned.

Is it possible to create and assign custom roles for the updated Hub Community Member user type?

Yes. It is still possible to create and assign custom roles to Hub Community Member user type. Any previously assigned role will not be affected.

Is my Hub Premium subscription pricing affected?

No, this change has no impact on Hub Premium pricing.

Have any permissions or functionality been removed, aside from being able to be Administrators?

Hi @ChelseaNivison

I have passed on some concerns to our account manager, but to highlight an issue here - limiting the number of users that can administer our hub community will cause us some issues. We have multiple initiatives, each overseen by one or more different staff members who have devolved responsibility for managing both the initiative and the associated community users (e.g. user invites and account setup, password resets, group allocations). Being limited to only 3 hub administrators will force this workload back to fewer staff and also remove project ownership from the relevant staff within our organisation. Please can this be reconsidered.

Also, can you confirm whether or not it will still be possible to manage roles and create custom roles for the updated Hub Community Member user type?

Many thanks,
Rob

Creator user types include an ArcGIS Pro Basic license, does the new Hub Community Member user type still include an ArcGIS Pro Basic license?  Thanks.

Yes, thanks for the clarification.  The new Hub user type still appears to be a downgrade from Creator, thus is there any mitigation for Hub Premium users that are losing many Creator accounts? Perhaps giving more Hub user type licenses in lieu of the user type downgrade?  Thanks.
