I have just downloaded Esri Maps for Office, and find I cannot sign-in.  I am trying to sign in to www.arcgis.com, using my D.Nick id that gets me in there OK.  When I try to sign in I get the following error screen.

Capture.PNG

I am very much a novice to all things ArcGIS - any ideas for solving this?

(I am wanting to use Esri Maps for Office to edit a shape file I have, which ArcGIS Online says is too large to load.  If there's another way of doing that, I am open to ideas)

Thx,

  NIck

Hello,

Can you try adding both www.arcgis.com and http://la.arcgis.com to your 'Trusted Sites' list in Internet Explorer (also called the WinInet Settings). There is a little box you must uncheck that states "Require Server Verification...'.

Here is a link to a Microsoft Article on the issue:

Security zones: adding or removing websites - Windows Help

Please let me know if this corrects your issue. Thank you very much-

Justin

Thanks, Justin.  Unfortunately, that has made no difference.

Is it possible that Esri Maps for Office does not work with a public account?

Hello Nick,

Thank you for the reply. Esri Maps for Office, and all of the other 'Esri Maps for' products, require an ArcGIS Online Organization. A simple ArcGIS Global Account would not work.

You can simply create a free trial of an organization if you'd like. I would recommend against converting your existing account into an Organizational trial though. If you do that, and choose not to continue using the Organization account at the end of the trial, all of the maps associated with your account could be lost. So please create a new account for the trial.

Thank you very much-

Justin

Thanks, Justin.  Following that would feel a little dishonest to me - if I have no intention of getting a paid-for account, I feel I should limit myself to the tools that are part of the free version

I'm guessing there's a way of adding fields to features using Desktop Explorer - I'll dig into that.

How do you sign up for a free organizational trial?  I can't find this anywhere on their website

You can get a 60 day free trial here:  ArcGIS for Desktop | Free Trial

Also, depending on what you are using it for, you can get a home use license for, I believe, $100 per year.

There are also open source options for GIS such as QGIS.

Thank you for your response Steven and I should have elaborated on my situation.  I am currently doing an ESRI Online Training using ArcView for Office.  I need to use ArcGIS in Excel in the training module.  Unfortunately, it requires that I belong to an organization and have 30 credits to complete the module.  I have neither of these things.  I have not been invited and do not currently hold any standing in an organization in the Online ArcGIS community.

A suggestion above stated to start a trial organization.  However, there is no information on how to do so.  The only thing I could find about creating and organization account stated to "get invited to an organization".  The only other information I found was on what to do once you received your confirmation email that your organization account was ready.

Do you have to contact ESRI to start and organizational account?

Thank you for your help.  For reference, I have a single use, Advance license (I am currently a student).

I believe the free trial I posted above is an organizational free trial because you can add multiple people to it.  I am not 100% sure though.  It may be best to contact ESRI and see.  If you are taking an online course from ESRI, I figured they would give you access to an organizational account for the course.

Since you are a student, your school may have access to AGOL already and could possibly add you to their organization.

Thanks Steven.  I will contact ESRI shortly.  I did not see anywhere in the training module that ESRI had an account just for the module.  I thought the same thing when I saw the requirements for the tutorial.  However, there is not ESRI organizational account to "mock up" through the training.  I will contact them as well as my professor and see what we can work out.  Thank you for your time.
