We’re excited to share some big news with you – our app has a brand-new release this month! 🎉

This update brings powerful new capabilities designed to make your Geoenablement workflows smoother, smarter, and more flexible than ever before.

Whether you’re tagging documents, searching spatially, or automating repetitive tasks, this release was built with you in mind. Let’s dive into what’s new.

To see these changes and maximize the possibility of the new capabilities in this release, make sure you have the latest version (2025.3.0.0) of ArcGIS for SharePoint installed from the Microsoft app store.

Automate your geoenablement workflows using ArcGIS for SharePoint

Automate your Geoenablement workflows with Power Automate

In the past, Geoenablement was only available as a client-side, on-demand solution. That meant you needed to manually run the process each time new data is added to a SharePoint list.

With this release, you now have the ability to automate the entire geoenablement workflow using Power Automate – just like you might already be doing with the “Extract EXIF data” feature in ArcGIS for SharePoint.

This enhancement allows you to:

  • Save time by removing repetitive manual steps
  • Integrate geoenablement directly into your broader automation workflows
  • Ensure consistency and reliability across your organization

Once the geoenablement flow is set up for a SharePoint list or a document library, any new item(s) or updates to existing item(s)will automatically trigger the geoenablement flow.

Geotag by coordinates – No feature layer needed

One of the most exciting updates in this release is the ability to geotag documents by coordinates.

What’s changed?

Previously, you needed to set up or use an existing feature layer and configure geotagging attribute(s) to geotag documents and perform geosearch. Now, you can skip that step entirely.

With this new feature, you can:

  • Use the basemap to tag documents to coordinates or any known location.
  • Perform a geosearch by map extent – simply pan or zoom the map, and instantly find all the documents within the visible area

How to enable geosearch by map extent

For geosearch by map extent to work, a quick setup is required in SharePoint. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1 – Create crawled properties

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization in the “ArcGIS” web part.
  2. Open the Geotag and geosearch tool.
  3. While on the Geotag by coordinates tab, select a few documents and drag them to a known location.
    • This step creates the required crawled properties (ows_ArcGISGeoTagX and ows_ArcGISGeoTagY) in the SharePoint “search” schema

Step 2 – Map managed properties in SharePoint “search” schema

  1. As a Microsoft or SharePoint admin, open the SharePoint admin center
  2. Click More features in the side menu
  3. Under Search, click Open.
  4. On the Search page, select Manage search schema.
  5. Go to the Managed properties tab and filter for “refinabledouble”.
  6. Pick any two existing “RefinableDouble” managed properties, assign aliases (ArcGISGeoTagX and ArcGISGeoTagY) , and then map them to the crawled properties (ows_ArcGISGeoTagX and ows_ArcGISGeoTagY).

Once the admin maps the “managed properties” and “crawled properties” (as shown in the above screen recording) , you can now proceed with your geotagging workflow. Switch to the Geosearch tab and click on the Use map extent button to view the geotagged documents within the visible area. (Please note that the geotagged documents may not be immediately available for geosearch. SharePoint has to add the tagged information to the Search index and this process might take several minutes)

Optional – Save geotagged locations to ArcGIS

Want to take a step further? You now have the option to digitize geotagged locations and add them as point features in a new feature layer within your ArcGIS organization.

To enable this option:

  1. Sign in with an ArcGIS user account that has a Creator (or higher) user type and appropriate permissions
  2. Switch the page to edit mode
  3. In the Geotag  pane and under the “Coordinates” tab, toggle on the Save to ArcGIS button
  4. Next, provide a suitable name for the feature layer, select the folder where you would like to store the newly created feature layer, select the sharing level, select any groups you would like to share the layer with and finally click on the “Create layer” button.

This release marks a big step forward in making your geospatial workflows faster, easier, and more connected. From automating geoenablement to geotagging by coordinates without a feature layer, we can’t wait for you to explore these new tools.

Be sure to check out the screen recordings above to see the new features in action. And as always, we’d love your feedback on how these enhancements are helping you.
